Why Betta Fish Fight Each Other

Betta fish is also famous by the name of Siam Fighting Fish. Siam is the conventional name for Thailand. There are many variety of betta fish, the most widespread is Betta Splendens. Betta is local to Thailand and is found in several other parts of Asia as well, namely Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia.

Betta is a labyrinth for the reason that it breathes oxygen from the air. Bettas are found in slow moving waters in paddy fields or small rivers. It is violent and defensive by temperament.

House And Condo

In several regions of Asia many people still employ them to fight for bets and it is one of the much loved past time. Through discriminating breeding and genetics development, now days we are seeing more diversities in finnage and colors of bettas. Halfmoon and plakat betta fishes are progressively becoming more preferred aquarium fish pets.

Why Betta Fish Fight Each Other

Betta fish fights to look after their area, to make sure that they have sufficient food, and also for the reason that they want to be "king of the hill" when the time for reproducing comes for them. These are hereditary qualities, and you can't train your Betta fish to fight.

In case if you place two male Betta fishes together in the tank, they will flare up at each other - (this means they inflate, flaring out their fins and gill covers, to make themselves look superior and more intimidating.) Time and again one fish will make a clean breast defeat and swim away, leaving the other male winning.

When people started keeping and fighting Betta fish, violent behavior was bred into them, but over the last few years, this quality has started to be bred out of them.

For the majority of the time male Betta fishes will only bother other males. On the other hand it's not completely unheard of for a male Betta fish to bother a new female or one that he feels endangered by, so it's always an excellent idea to keep an eye on your Betta fish when you initially place another fish into the tank, or if you're placing your Betta in with other fish.

At times a more violent Betta fish will pinch or bite the other fish. Therefore if you see this incident, take away the violent one right away to keep away from injuries.

Actually there is only one way to prevent your betta fish from fighting- don't keep two male Betta fishes in the same tank. If you have just one tank and two male Betta fishes, you have two alternatives - one is to make use of a "fish condo" and the other one is to use a separator or single mesh divider.

Fish Condos: These are apparent plastic containers with air holes that allow the tank water flow all the way through them. Depending on the dimension of your tank, you can also fit in two, three or four space fish condos. Each Betta fish have possession of his own space, and you can put up visual blockades for example plants or java moss so that one betta fish can't see the other.

You can also place a single mesh divider in one part of your tank that will maintain your male Betta fish alienated from each other.

As per Mr. Walt Maurus in a book named "Bettas a Complete Introduction," this diversity of betta was developed by a prisoner of the Indiana State Prison named Orville Gulley. He was trying to create a black butterfly betta in his prison cell in peanut butter jars and he was selling his extra fishes to Walt. Marble Betta fishes appeared in the middle of these extras and have been kept going by various other breeders. There are marbled bettas of approximately every color mixture possible now.

It seems that Dr. Pronger uncovered some fertilized betta eggs to x-ray radiation and as a result a number of them fry turned black in color. And the baby fishes produced from these eggs are known as melano betta fish. These melano bettas are excellent looking fish, but the female melanos don't produce sufficient eggs. It appears that the metamorphosis that produced the black pigment also changed the temperament of the egg membranes so that they are no longer water proof and no one of them ever hatch. That's the problem with rays...you can't just focus it on one genetic material.

The Best Paint Colors For Small Rooms

Are you dealing with a small room and wondering what the best paint colors are to make it look larger? If so, we're going to go over a few options you can choose from that will give you the look you want.

Consider the following choices to open your space up...

House And Condo

Option 1) Use a (Light) Cool Color. If it's not yet obvious (light) cool colors are said to be the best colors to go with because they trick the eyes into thinking they are further away than they really are. If you're wondering what colors classify as cool colors, cool colors are considered to be...

The Best Paint Colors For Small Rooms

blue green purple

Putting an example to them, you can think of the colors of the ocean or sea, sky and trees.

Option 2) Use a Gloss Finish. If you want to go a step further consider using a gloss finish. Paint experts at Behr.com have said that using a gloss finish can also contribute to making a small room appear larger. The best ones to use are said to be an eggshell finish, satin finish and semi-gloss finish. You'll want to stick witch using a semi-gloss finish for the kitchen and bathroom. For bedrooms, living rooms and other rooms of the house a more subtle approach is best--the satin and eggshell finish being great choices for those rooms.

Option 3) Use Monochromatic Colors. A monochromatic color scheme is simply using colors that are close in tone so that when the eye moves around the room it is uninterrupted and tricks you into believing there's more space than there really is. A simple way to go about using a monochromatic color scheme is to use colors from the same palette, such as light blue, medium blue and so forth.

Lastly, after discovering that cool colors are the best colors in principal, you still might want to consider another choice.

Option 4) Compromise with a Light Warm Color. If you're wondering what warm colors are, they are yellow, orange and red. Putting them into an example, warm colors are the colors of heat. You can think of the sun and fire as good examples.

Generally, warm colors get the opposite results that cool colors get. That is, they make a room feel smaller because they appear as though they are coming toward you. However, they also make a space feel cozy, which means it's sometimes worth the sacrifice to pick a warm color, especially if you love it.

Remember, you'll be the one living in your home day in and day out. You want to be certain that the colors you pick are colors you can enjoy. If you can't enjoy the selection of cool colors then it might be best to you to pull from both worlds...

That way you'll still be getting something light but warm at the same time. Choosing a light warm color will then ensure that your room will feel fairly bright to you, but also offer you that intimate feeling that you couldn't deny yourself.

So keep in mind not to only choose what's best for your rooms but also what's best for you...

After all these are choices you'll have to live with every single day.

The Top 10 Piano Songs of All Time

The top 10 piano songs of all time may be more a matter of personal preference than anything. Ask any piano student though, and he'll likely name at least five of these 10. This list contains many of the "staples" of piano instructors worldwide:

1. Beethoven's "Fur Elise." Take piano lessons a few years and you'll certainly encounter this classical piece. Most every young piano student requests Beethoven's "Fur Elise" early in his or her career.

Top 10

2. Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer." Joplin managed to capture audiences during an era when "Negro music" was still controversial. Classical musicians of the early 20th century would have balked at Joplin's name appearing alongside the likes of Beethoven and Mozart. Today, few would exclude this ragtime song from a top 10 piano songs list.

The Top 10 Piano Songs of All Time

3. Pachelbel's "Canon in D major." Simply referred to as "Pachelbel's Canon," it often gets left off of favorite piano songs lists. That's because it was originally written for stringed instruments. Nevertheless, the piano adaptation is one that most every intermediate to advanced piano student plays during his or her career.

4. Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." Beethoven had one of the most prolific musical careers in history. It's little wonder that his name appears more than once on the popularity list. His "Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor" is probably more widely recognized by its common name, the "Moonlight Sonata."

5. Brahm's "Hungarian Dance." Brahm may be known better in mainstream culture for his "Lullaby." Every piano student learns both his "Lullaby" and the "Hungarian Dance." The "Hungarian Dance" typically refers to his "No. 5 in F sharp minor." The "Hungarian Dance" is actually a series of 21 songs. A great many of them were simply adaptations of existing songs. "No. 5 in F sharp minor" was one of a few originals.

6. Debussy's "Clair de Lune." This song appears as one of four movements in Claude Debussy's "Suite Bergamasque." The suite was probably based on Paul Verlaine's poem of the same name. Its soft, lilting sounds contrast beautifully with the rest of the suite's joyful parts.

7. Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." Ludwig van Beethoven cracks the list again with this song from his last complete symphony: "Symphony No. 9." It was unusual in regard to many of his works, as well as others of the time. It was based on Friedrich Schiller's poem of the same name and included human voices as orchestral instruments.

8. "Minuet in G." This familiar piece is somewhat controversial. It is historically attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, having appeared in Bach's "Notebook for Anna Magdalena." The book was a series of compositions dedicated to Bach's wife. The authorship of "Minuet in G" and another work was called into question hundreds of years later. Many musical historians now attribute it to Bach's contemporary, Christian Petzold. Controversy aside, it remains a loved favorite of pianists everywhere.

9. Mozart's "Turkish March." No top 10 piano songs list would be complete without a nod to Mozart. His "Turkish March" or "Turkish Rondo" is a difficult piece to play, usually only attempted after several years of piano lessons.

10. Billy Joel's "Root Beer Rag." It's fitting to include at least one contemporary artist in a top ten piano songs list. Billy Joel's career is often reduced to his influence on pop music. But soulful ballads like "The Piano Man" only provide a glimpse into his musical talent. Billy Joel is considered one of the most proficient pianists alive today. His "Root Beer Rag" is attempted by many advanced piano students. Most agree, however, that few execute this lightning-fast number quite like the master himself.

Valentines Day Fundraisers

Valentines Day is a great time for fundraising, particularly for school groups and small nonprofits. Here are four quick ways to raise funds with easy Valentines Day fundraisers.

Sell Roses

House And Condo

One of the easiest ways to raise funds on Valentines Day is to sell roses. You can offer single roses, a full dozen, various flower bouquets, or delicious chocolate roses.

Valentines Day Fundraisers

Each one can usually be sold at 100% markup for a 50% profit margin. You can source roses from supermarkets with flower departments, wholesale florists, or websites that specialize in bulk shipments from the major rose-growing areas on the West Coast.

Obviously, men will make up the bulk of your target market for flower buyers, so you should gear your marketing to them. You'll need to pre-sell your roses or stake out some high-traffic areas to reach a lot of last-minute guys.

Chocolate roses are a great seller in schools and workplaces. They are a great gift that fits a good niche on Valentines Day. They are unique and generate a lot of interest. They are also a safe gift to give for non-romantic purposes, and they never go to waste.

Take advance orders whenever possible and have a central pickup point. You can also increase your results by providing extra services on Valentines Day such as gift delivery, singing telegrams, offering last-minute roses in high-traffic locations, etc.

Create Gift Baskets

It's easy to create gift baskets for your group to pre-sell for Valentines Day. Simply go to a craft store such as Michaels and purchase the quantity of baskets you'll need. Then do several shopping runs to major wholesale clubs like BJ's, Sam's Club, and Costco for your gift basket contents.

Create some baskets with a selection of wine, cheese, chocolates, coffee, candy, gourmet biscuits, etc. Give them each a theme and establish a variety of price ranges.

Once you have your samples ready, you can start pre-selling. Use a simple order taker form and collect payment upfront. Then, create the rest of the baskets needed to fulfill your advance orders.

Use a central pickup point or offer local delivery or UPS shipping for an extra charge.

Auction Valentines Day Gifts

Another great Valentines Day fundraiser is to conduct auctions of gifts appropriate for the holiday. Your choices include running an event-based auction, conducting a silent auction, hosting an online auction on your website, or listing your gifts on eBay. You can even do combinations of these four auction styles.

Some simple items to auction are the gift baskets mentioned above. You can also offer restaurant gift certificates, specialty items, business services, or donated items.

High-ticket items that you can offer might include spa visits, limo rides, romantic weekend getaways, and a night on the town at a gourmet restaurant.

Don't forget to offer gifts for men such as sports memorabilia, event tickets, bottles of wine, etc.

Raffle Themed Prizes

Another way to raise funds is to sell raffle tickets. You can offer a selection of prizes such as those Valentines Day gifts previously mentioned. Or, you can even include some with a different theme or timing such as ski vacations or a condo stay with a week at the beach.

Raffles offer an easier way to reach a larger potential audience than you might draw for an event or for various types of auctions.

A raffle allows you to put a larger sales force to work than you can with other methods, but be sure to check your local regulations regarding selling raffle tickets.

Good luck with your Valentines Day fundraisers!

Top 10 Signs Of Cheating Men - Here They Are!

There are signs of cheating men that are there and shouldn't be ignored. If you are reading this article then you may already suspect your man is having an affair. It has been reported that over 70% of the women that suspected their spouse was cheating was right. That's an astonishing percentage. Men will try and cover their tracks, but there are just too many signs for them to cover them all.

Signs of Cheating Men

Top 10

1. You get that gut feeling that tells you he's cheating on you. Things just aren't adding up. You all of sudden feel the need to go through his belongings almost expecting to find something.

Top 10 Signs Of Cheating Men - Here They Are!

2. When you question your man he gets very defensive. He might even get mad at you to throw you off. He is hoping that you will put your thoughts of infidelity to rest if you are afraid to ask about it.

3. His stories aren't making sense anymore. This is because he will make up a story at that time and for the moment not realizing that the date or times don't add up. He will sometimes forget what he told 3 days ago. So make a mental note and ask again casually in 3 days. Work will seem to pop up a lot to cover time lapses. This is classic. I was the hardest working man when I was cheating!

4. You are feeling that dis-connected feeling within your relationship. Remember that see-saw back in the school yard. When one side went up, you know where the other side was. This is usually the same when your mate is having an affair. Many times there is a deeper problem in the relationship that would need to be fixed anyhow if you are to truly be happy. Although you are not to blame for someone stepping out on a relationship, infidelity is usually a symptom of a deeper problem.

5. You discover e-mail accounts that you didn't know existed. He will refuse to give you access to his email account. He's not stupid! Is he?

6. He doesn't invite you around his friends, company events, and other social activities. Is he cheating at work? It can be worse than a nightclub. There will probably be less of a chance that he is cheating at a night club.

7. Unusual mood swings. These are one of many signs of cheating men that is caused by the internal conflict and struggle that you man is going through during his time of infidelity.

8. Lack of intimacy. This doesn't always have to be in the form of sex. It can be a decline of touching, cuddling, holding hands or kissing.

9. The sex frequency has changed! Yup, I remember a conversation with a man in a night club many years ago and what he told me was.

"If you remember one thing, remember that if your wife is use to having sex three times a week, it should never fall below three. It can be more sometimes but never less!"

He had this sign covered. The problem is that many men will have a few signs covered, but there are just too many to hide.

10. He doesn't answers his cell phone around you. A way to tell if your boyfriend is cheating is if he always turns his ringer off around you or walks away from you so that you can't hear his conversation. This should be a major warning light in your relationship. If he receives calls at odd hours or speaks on the phone in a strange manner could also be signs he is cheating.

There is not quite any order to these signs of cheating men, but if you are seeing any of them, you should monitor your relationship closely. Make mental notes as well as written notes to jot down things that come to your mind or maybe a story that doesn't make sense. You can always check back later after you've asked your man again to see if you got the same answer. They will forget their lies a lot of times!

Good Luck and be sure to come back for more signs of cheating men.

Discount Lift Tickets - Learn What Colorado Ski Resorts Do Not Want You To Know!

How to get Discount lift tickets for Keystone Colorado, Breckenridge Colorado, Arapahoe Basin Colorado, Loveland Ski Area Colorado, Copper Mountain Colorado, Winter Park Colorado, Vail Colorado, Beaver Creek Colorado

Updated for the 2005-2006 ski season.

House And Condo

Discount Lift Tickets in Colorado- All Colorado ski resorts make it difficult for anyone coming from out of state to get a great deal on lift tickets. Don't expect to get a great deal anywhere if you didn't start looking in late September or early October. As your Keystone Lodging provider, we can help, but WE DO NOT SELL LIFT TICKETS.

Discount Lift Tickets - Learn What Colorado Ski Resorts Do Not Want You To Know!

The most expensive way to ski is to buy your lift tickets at the ticket window without any coupons. The following information will help you find the best deal around no matter what time of year.

Colorado Ski Season Passes

If you are in Colorado in April, September or October, you can look into buying a season pass for Keystone, Breckenridge, and A-Basin. Both Loveland and Copper Mountain sometimes sell season passes into November. If you plan on skiing 5 or more days, a season pass to one of the areas ski resorts will more than pay for itself and is the cheapest way to go...even though you won't get to use it for the entire season.

:: Keystone :: Breckenridge :: A-Basin :: Vail :: Beaver Creek ::

Season passes are sold along the front range at places like Gart Sports, REI, and Christy Sports. Season passes for Keystone, Breckenridge and A-Basin usually cost around 9. A 2nd option is to pay slightly more and get 10 days at Vail or Beaver Creek added to that same pass. You MUST buy these in person, and you typically have to use it at least once before the holiday season, or it will become invalid for the rest of the year. These passes do have blackout dates during the holidays and during Presidents Day weekend usually, so make sure you read the fine print before purchasing these ski passes. If you're planning an early season trip (Before December 20th) AND a later prime ski season trip (January - April), this is by far the least expensive way to go. Best of all, once you get a pass that you have to buy in person, you can renew it over the web year after year.

:: Arapahoe Basin Only ::

This year, Arapahoe Basin is offering a season pass of their own. For the 2005-2006 ski season, these are only 9. This allows unlimited skiing at Arapahoe Basin, but also allows you to ski at Keystone or Breckenridge for 5 days. One of the 5 days can be used at either Vail or Beaver Creek. This is an awesome deal if you're coming out for a short trip of 5 days or more. Best of all, you can buy these over the phone and just pick them up at the base area of Arapahoe Basin. As always, get in on this deal EARLY. Passes are usually sold in September and October only. Check out the Arapahoe Basin Website for full details.

:: Copper Mountain :: Winter Park :: Mary Jane ::

Copper Mountain is offering season passes for the 2005-2006 ski season for only 9. You can buy these without being present, but you must submit a photo of yourself so they can print your pass. Add a few more dollars and you can ski Winter Park and Mary Jane too. However, Winter Park is a solid 1 hour drive from Summit County. Still, the skiing at Mary Jane is legendary and you won't be disappointed with your day excursion to the snowpack in the Fraser Valley of Colorado.

:: Loveland Ski Area ::

Lesser known by people from out-of state, Loveland is a very inexpensive option. You'll see Loveland Ski area on your way into Summit County on the East Portal of the Eisenhower Tunnel. The closest ski lodging to Loveland is in Keystone....only 15 miles away. Loveland offers season passes for 3. Being an independent ski resort, you can only ski at Loveland. Loveland is one of the highest ski resorts on North America and they are usually the first to open the ski season in North America in October. Check the webste for details. They have an outstanding variety of terrain and there are little or no crowds at any given time.

++++++++++++ Warning ++++++++++++

Do not EVER try to use a 4 pack or season pass that is not yours. There are extremely stiff penalties including large fines and possible jail time if you are caught. The lift operators WILL catch you. A free lift ride is simply not worth the consequences.

++++++++++++ Warning ++++++++++++

Colorado Ski Resort "Four Packs"

Another money-saving tip is to buy what is called a "4 pack" for your ski resort of choice. A "4 pack" is 4 days of skiing for any 1 person. Typically the ski resorts sell these early in the season, but have also been known to sell them again in late March or in April. Buying late in the season is ideal...unknown to many, April is usually the snowiest month in Colorado!

:: Keystone :: Breckenridge ::

For the Keystone and Breckenridge 4 packs, you must buy them in person and they are not transferrable. In previous years they have been transferrable until people started selling them for a profit on eBay. $ packs usually run about and are bought in the same fashion that a Season Pass is bought. The 4 packs do have blackout dates, so read the fine print carefully.

:: Copper Mountain :: Winter Park :: Mary Jane ::

Copper Mountain offers 4 packs for only and ARE transferrable. This deal usually is around for about a week and may have already passed. If so, you're still in luck...both Copper Mountain and Winter Park offer 4 packs for 0, which is still only per day. This offer expires on Dec 9th 2005, so jump on this quickly if you want to get in on the deal! There are usually rules and restrictions as to the dates you can use the 4 pack, so check the fine print carefully.

:: Loveland Ski Area ::

Loveland also offers a 4 pack as well for the 2005-2006 ski season. The 4 packs run only but are only available through November 21st 2005. There are no blackout dates on these 4 packs and can be used anytime during the 2005-2006 ski season at Loveland.

:: Aspen :: Snowmass ::

Okay, so these 2 resorts aren't really all that close to Summit County, but if you want to see what celebrities do during the winter in Colorado...try Aspen or Snowmass for a day. Cheap passes are available, but you have to get them in person. They are available up until November 20th, 2005 at select locations around the Colorado Front Range.

Other ways to get Discount Lift Tickets

THIS IS THE BEST LIFT TICKET DEAL IN COLORADO.

Keystone Lift Tickets Sign up for a free Colorado Gem Card. These cards will give you discounts at other ski areas that are further away. The closest resort that accepts this card is Loveland Ski area, which is about 15 miles away right at the Eisenhower Tunnel on the Continental Divide.

Keystone Lift Tickets Know someone with a season pass? Season Pass holders usually can buy a lift ticket for you for a deeply discounted price of -. The number of times they can do this is limited.

Keystone Lift Tickets Don't forget eBay! Many times people will buy a package deal and not be able to use it. Sometimes it's a 4 pack, sometimes it's someone who has an inside track to the resort and is trying to make some money on the side. Either way, MAKE SURE you check the lift tickets carefully to make sure you know what you're getting. Search around and see what you can find!

Keystone Lift Tickets Buy an Entertainment book for the Denver area. These books are PACKED with ski coupons. We typically buy these books and keep them available for our guests to use. The coupons are for slightly discounted lift tickets. ( - off ticket window prices) There are also coupons for ski school.

Keystone Lift Tickets Buy your tickets on the front range in or around Denver. Go to any Safeway or King Soopers grocery stores, or ski and snowboard rental shop. They sell disount lift tickets for most ski areas.

Keystone Lift Tickets As your Keystone Lodging provider, just ask us and we'll do what we can to get you the right information you need or point you in the right direction to save you the most money given the time period of your visit. Coupons are first come first serve. These coupons usually come from Entertainment Books, and wherever else we can find them. We do not sell lift tickets.

BE CAREFUL - Some other lodging providers will entice you with a "package deal" saying that they will give you discounted lift tickets after your reserve your lodging...only to suddenly "run out" of the lift tickets after they have your money.

Top Reasons To Buy A Home

Even with the economy as poor as it is right now, there are still some good reasons to buy a home. For many people, owning their own place is still one of their biggest dreams. Not only is it a dream come true for many people, it is also an investment that you can make that will help provide for your future.

Right now, due to the current economy, the housing market is full of homes that are for sale. Many of them are priced to sell and are listed much lower than the market price. By taking advantage and buying right now, you will probably get a bigger deal than you had anticipated. Many people are finding that they can afford to buy a bigger home than they could afford a few years ago, even though their income may not have increased.

Top 10

Another reason to buy now is that interest rates are lower right now then they have ever been before. 2 years ago the rates were averaging 6%, now they are all the way down to 4%. Some might feel that it would work to their benefit to wait a bit longer to see if the rates will drop even further, however it is recommended that you buy now and, in the event that the rates drop again, you refinance your mortgage loan. This will allow you to lock in the lower rate in the future without risking the opportunity that is in front of you today.

You can also deduct the interest on your mortgage from your Federal taxes. The money that you can save with this tax break usually is substantial. As a renter, you will not see this kind of a tax break.

Most people will say that the biggest benefit of owning their own place is that it is theirs. They no longer have to live in a plain white home that they cannot paint. They no longer have to live with the threat of being asked to move out. As a renter, even if your landlord will allow you to paint or do any remodeling, it will only benefit them, not you, if you move.

Sometimes finding a good rental place in a nice location can be difficult. When you own the property, you can live happily knowing that you have found a long term answer to where you are going to live. You will not have to worry about moving until you are ready to.

As banks foreclose or are unable to sell the homes they have, the list of available properties continues to grow. For this reason, right now it is a buyer's market. Any buyer will have there choice of nearly any home that they want available to them.

There are a lot of reasons to buy a home, this is only a brief summary of a few of those reasons. Now is the time to take advantage because eventually the economy will become stable and these opportunities will no longer exist. Owning a house can be a very favorable experience.

A Condom by Any Other Name

Condoms, jimmies, rubbers...you might think you've heard them all. Condoms are one of the world's most common prophylactics. Here are 5 things that you might not otherwise know about condoms and their names.

1. English Nicknames

House And Condo

One of the most known nicknames for condom is rubber. However, if you go to a convenience store in Australia or New Zealand and ask for a rubber, you will be handed an eraser. This could make for awkward moments for Kiwis or Aussies traveling abroad who just want to erase a mistake: "Could I have a rubber, mate?"

A Condom by Any Other Name

Other English nicknames include jimmy hat, raincoat, or hazmat suit: a suit you don for dealing with hazardous materials. The term "love glove" led to the famous safe sex slogan "No Glove, No Love."

2. International Nicknames

English isn't the only language that had odd nicknames for condoms. In Denmark, they are called gummimand, which literally means "rubberman." In Germany, they are called lummeltute, or "naughty bags." Hungarian terminology emphasizes the protective aspect by calling a condom an ovsver, or a "safety tool." Hong Kong similarly demonstrates the protective value by calling a condom a pei dang vi, or a "bulletproof vest." In Portugal they call condoms "Venus' shirts" or camisa de Venus: remember, Venus is the goddess of love after all, so it makes sense!

Other countries can be more literal with their meanings: in Nigeria, a condom is an okpuamu, or a "penis hat." In Indonesia, instead of a hat, it's a "penis gourd" or a koteca.

In English a condom is sometimes called a raincoat: in Greek it is sometimes called a kapota, or an overcoat. In Spain, a condom is called a globo, or balloon. Remember, although you can use a condom for a balloon, you can't use a balloon for a condom!

3. National Tensions

Some nicknames of the condoms demonstrate international tensions. In Germany, a slang term for a condom is a "Pariser," or a Parisian. In English, condoms are sometimes called French Letters. Why is France associated with condoms? This might be because other countries associated all that was decadent with France.

As a side note, a French Letter will protect you against the French Disease; or, to put it more plainly, a condom will help protect you against syphilis. Syphilis was called the French Disease because of the outbreak in the French Army in the sixteenth century; it was the Italians that coined that phrase (morbus gallicus).

The French, however, might have gotten their linguistic come-uppance with their terminology. The French called syphilis "la maladie anglaise," or the English Disease. They even called it the Italian disease or the Neapolitan disease too. Other countries were equally derisive, with the Arabs calling syphilis the English disease and the Russians calling it the Polish disease.

Although most nationally-derogatory terms for syphilis are now in the past, the French still call condoms "la capote anglaise," or the English raincoat.

4. Condom, France

Yes, there is a town in France called Condom. As far as linguists know, it has nothing do with the etymology of the word condom. There is a folktale that the English got their word condom from this location. English travelers came and saw French farmers sewing prophylactics from sheep guts. Whether or not this is true, you can still get sheepskin condoms (made from sheep intestines). They are softer than latex or polyurethane condoms and increase sensation. However, sheepskin condoms do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, they simply work to prevent pregnancy.

5. The Real Origins of the Word Condom

Unfortunately, we don't know the real origins of the word "Condom." Was it named after a Dr. Condom, or a Dr. Quondam, as some tales tell? Is it named after a British army officer, Cundum? Or is it named after the Italian court adviser, Gondi? (A "gondon" or "goldoni" is another word for condom in Italy).

Whatever the origins of our word condom, and whatever you choose to call it, wear a condom. Condoms prevent unwanted pregnancies and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
